Consumption Tax Refund System for International Visitors to Japan

Starting in November 2026, Japan’s tax-free shopping system will transition to a tax refund system.International visitors purchasing goods at tax-free stores will first pay the purchase price including consumption tax. Upon departure from Japan, they may receive a refund equivalent to the consumption tax after completing the required procedures and receiving customs confirmation at the airport or another designated location.

▶ Points to Note

 

〇Tax refund procedures cannot be completed after checked baggage has been handed over to the airline. If you have checked baggage, please complete the procedures before checking your baggage at the airline counter.

 

〇Please allow sufficient time to complete the tax refund procedures before your departure. Please note that Customs, airlines, and the airport operator cannot provide compensation if you are unable to board your flight due to delays associated with the tax refund procedures.

 

〇Tax-free procedures via Visit Japan Web (VJW) are not available at Sendai Airport.

 

〇There are no cash refund terminals or counters at Sendai Airport .
Refunds are paid by the method set by the store or refund operator (such as credit card or electronic payment). Please check the refund method when you buy.
